An advance is a set of questions about ground you have not walked yet. Where do people arrive, and what overlooks that spot? Where does a crowd stack up when a door opens late? If this goes wrong at the worst possible moment, where does everybody go, and what is in their way? A good team answers those on foot, with a tape measure and a notebook and half a day. That is still the work. But some of those questions are answered faster from two hundred feet than from the sidewalk, and a few of them cannot honestly be answered from the ground at all.

We fly the advance for the same reason we walk it: to replace an assumption with something we can put in a brief and hand to a client. What changes is which assumptions get replaced, and how quickly.

What the walk cannot show you.

Standing at a fence line, you learn the fence is there. From altitude you learn the fence stops forty feet short of the treeline, that the gap has a worn path through it, and that the path leads to a service road nobody on the plan has mentioned. You learn that the two parking areas everyone treats as separate actually funnel into one choke point, and that the choke point is directly under the only roof with line of sight to the arrival.

Ground truth is a series of local views stitched together by memory. An overhead is one view of the whole thing, at one moment, with the relationships between parts visible rather than inferred. That is the difference, and it is the entire value.

The three questions altitude answers fastest.

Where does a crowd stack. Queueing behavior is a shape, and shapes are legible from above. A single pass over a load-in at the hour it actually happens will show you the pinch that will still be there on show night.

What overlooks the arrival. Sightlines to a drop point are the hardest thing to reconstruct from the ground, because you have to stand in every place that might matter. From above you can see every elevated position that has an angle on the spot in a single frame.

Where everyone goes when it stops. Egress on paper is a set of exits. Egress in reality is where those exits deliver people, and whether the place they deliver them to can hold them. Overheads make that obvious in a way an evacuation diagram does not.

What it is not.

An aerial is not a substitute for the walk, and any operator who tells you otherwise is selling aircraft. You cannot read a door hinge from altitude. You cannot tell whether a lock is engaged, whether a stairwell smells like a smoking area, whether the panic hardware on an exit has been zip-tied by someone who got tired of the alarm. Those are the things that hurt you, and they are found by a person putting a hand on them.

What the aerial does is tell the walking team where to spend its hours. It converts a full day of wandering into a prioritized list before anyone leaves the vehicle.

The regulatory floor is not optional.

Commercial flight in United States airspace requires a Remote Pilot Certificate under 14 CFR Part 107. Most venues worth flying sit under controlled airspace, which means authorization through LAANC or a manual filing, secured before the date rather than argued about on it. Night, flight over people, and beyond visual line of sight each need their own waiver, and a waiver you do not have is a flight that does not happen.

The part operators skip is privacy. A camera at altitude is a legal exposure as much as a capability, and California in particular treats airborne intrusion onto private property as its own cause of action under Civil Code 1708.8. We fly with the property owner's authority, and we do not conduct surveillance over ground we have no business over, because the imagery is worthless the moment it becomes the thing the client gets sued about.

Why the pilot should already know the plan.

Most aerial work is bought from a vendor who arrives, flies, leaves, and hands over a folder. That is fine for a real estate listing. It is a problem over a live event, a principal's residence, or a set with a confidentiality agreement attached, because the person at the controls has no context for what they are looking at and no obligation for what they capture.

When the flight is run by the same organization writing the advance, the pilot is briefed on the operation, bound by the same terms as the detail, and the footage is handled under the same controls as the rest of the file. More usefully, when the aerial reveals something, it reaches the people who can act on it that afternoon rather than three days later in a deliverable.

Twenty minutes at altitude does not replace the advance. It tells the advance where to look.
