Executive protection is not bodyguarding. The vocabulary the corporate market often uses is wrong, and the wrongness produces engagements that operate at a level the protectee's actual exposure does not justify.

The protectee is not a body to be guarded. The protectee is a person living a life, with a family, a calendar, a set of relationships, and an exposure profile that the protective program operates inside. The discipline is not to interrupt the life. The discipline is to make the life possible at the level the protectee chooses to live it.

Advance work is the work performed before the protectee arrives, by people the protectee will never see, in places the protectee will never know were considered. The output is several things at once. A walk-through of the venue with protective eyes. A route survey with primary, secondary, and alternate paths identified. The hard rooms identified along the walking paths. The medical capability staged. The relationships with venue and public safety partners established.

When the protectee arrives, the environment they enter has already been prepared for them. The Advance Team has done its work. The Lead has signed off. The detail running the visit is operating inside a system someone else has already built.

This is the majority of the work. The visible part of executive protection, the detail walking with the protectee, is the smaller part. The work that produces the visible part's effortlessness is the advance work that the protectee never sees.
